Fred Stoller’s guide to restaurants you don’t feel self conscious eating alone at

I am an expert at eating alone. I’ve probably spent 91% of all my meals by myself. I’m not complaining, okay, maybe I will later on, but I just wish to pass my expertise on this subject of which are the best places for feeling comfortable eating solo so you don’t have to go through the trail and error of finding them like I did.

I don’t work in an office, or anywhere most of the time, so when I get hungry, I like to get out of my apartment. But I also have found it could be a harrowing experience eating by yourself at the wrong establishment.

I wish I could be one of those people who sit at a restaurant by myself, read the paper while chatting up the waitress, “So, what’s new in your world, Doris?” But I have the social skills of a skittish cat.

The idea is to get out without feeling bad that you are out and alone. You want to find a place that isn’t too dreary, but not too trendy with happy cool couples spilling about.

I usually like a place that doesn’t have waitress service. I like the freedom to be able to bolt at any moment, so that’s why I love paying for my food before I eat.

What if all of a sudden an annoying couple comes in sits next to each other and starts smooching right next to you?

So I’ll keep you posted. I’m off to eat, I don’t know where, but I’ll let you know if it’s good or not.
